5 Ways to Stay Mentally Healthy

Our entire being rests on our shoulders—literally. A healthy mind leads to a healthy body and spirit. Since May is National Mental Health and Awareness month, we thought we would take some time to talk about 5 ways to stay mentally healthy.

  1. Take breaks. Don’t overwork yourself; break regularly throughout the day. Once the workday is done, shut down the computer and/or clock-out. Tomorrow’s another day. Be sure not to neglect yourself and the relationships that matter for the sake of accomplishing more at work. Sure—it’s important to have a strong work ethic, but there is a balance.
  2. Get enough sleep. We all need sleep. Who hasn’t experienced the lack of functionality when sleep deprived? Our moods, creativity, thought process—it all depends on sleep.
  3. Find your passion. We get energized when we are volunteering to some capacity. Whether it is at the animal shelter or homeless shelter, we want a sense of significance and purpose; to do something that matters in this world. And who doesn’t want to feel needed? When we connect with a cause that breaks our heart, we may have found our passion. Helping will do our hearts and minds good.
  4. Socialize—in person. Step away from the digital device and go meet up with a friend. Not only does verbal communication help us to not appear socially awkward when we have to talk in person, but it is important in many other ways. One of those ways is that having a good interaction can heighten our mood. It is reported that we increase our likelihood of depression when we isolate ourselves. Also, doctor’s report a link to faster progression of memory loss in Alzheimer’s sufferers due to a lack of social interaction. We truly weren’t meant to live alone; someone who is uncomfortable around people will still internally crave the company of others.
  5. Eat healthy and exercise. Okay, this has to do with the physical and may sound a bit cliché, but it is truth; filling up with junk food and soda pop doesn’t do a body or mind Drinking water, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week and eating healthy is going to improve your mind as well as your body.

Hope this is some good motivation for you. Live well and take care.
