If you are living on a budget (or need to be), you might not be able to afford to jet off to Hawaii or take an Alaskan cruise this summer. So let’s get creative! Pretend you’re a tourist and set out to see the local sites! #staycation

Here are 7 local hot spots to hit this summer that won’t break your bank!

  1. The Beach. There are a ton of beach spots along Chicago’s eastern border and with a limited open season—you’ll want to take full advantage. So check out some swim and skin safety tips, grab what you need and hit the beach!
  2. Trails. The Chicago area has lots of trails, including the 18-mile lakefront trail that extends from the north side to the south side. So, if you are a biker, rollerblader, walker or jogger, get your exercise on one of the many trails offered, while enjoying the open air.
  3. Watch the Air and Water Show. The annual Chicago Air and Water Show is August 19-20th from 10am to 3 pm on North Ave. Beach. It is the longest running show of its kind, and the best part is—it’s free!
  4. Parks. Millennium Park, in particular, will host many free events this summer to include a free music series on certain Mondays and Thursdays between June 12—August 17th, as well as, a free movie series on Tuesdays between June 13th—August 29th. In addition, according to the Chicago Park District, there are 601 parks in the Chicago area. They all welcome activities like walking, picnics, playing or just relaxing—pick one and go have some free fun.
  5. Water rides. Whether you are wanting to watch the lakefront fireworks at Navy Pier, do some sightseeing or you just want to rent a boat and cruise around yourself, there are more than a few rental spots to look in to.
  6. Museums. There seems to be a museum for every interest. Whether you are into history, contemporary art, science or you name it, there may just be a museum dedicated to it within a short drive.
  7. Street treats. If you love a cool treat on a hot day, then beat the heat by stopping by a local shop for some Italian ice, gelato, frozen custard or an ice cream

Go a step further in becoming a local tourist. See if there are any Groupons or look into getting a CityPass. You may find some great deals and stumble upon a new place in the process. <3
